Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): Get Quoted by ChatGPT

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): Get Quoted by ChatGPT

Your customers are changing the way they search. They no longer type three keywords and open ten links. They ask ChatGPT or Gemini directly, or read the AI summary at the top of Google. So the question for a business has changed too: how do you get AI to mention you?

The answer is GEO – Generative Engine Optimization: optimising your content so that generative AI tools understand it, trust it and cite your website.

How is Generative Engine Optimization different from traditional SEO?

Traditional SEOGEO
GoalRank in Google's top 10Be cited inside the AI's answer
Who "reads" itA ranking algorithmA language model that combines many sources
Unit of optimisationKeywords, pagesAnswers, facts, entities (businesses, products)
What winsLinks, speed, keywordsClarity, figures, sources, the right question

GEO does not replace SEO. GEO sits on top of SEO. If a website is slow, not indexed or badly structured, AI cannot read it either.

Why GEO matters right now

According to search trend data for August–October 2026:

  • AI summaries (Google AI Overviews) appear on roughly 43% of searches.
  • When AI answers directly on the results page, the click-through rate to traditional websites drops by almost half, from about 15% to 8%.
  • But visitors who arrive through a link cited by AI convert up to 42% better: they already know exactly what they need.
  • Searches for "Generative Engine Optimization", "AI search optimization" and "how to appear on ChatGPT" are rising sharply among marketers and businesses.

In other words, "just curious" clicks will fall, while "already decided" visitors coming from AI will grow. Whoever gets cited by AI wins the best customers.

6 things a business should do for GEO

1. Write to answer a real question. Each page should fully answer one question customers often ask: "How much does hotel management software for a small property cost?", "Does a website AI chat need coding?". Put the answer in the opening paragraph and the details after.

2. Include concrete facts. AI prefers content with numbers, comparison tables and clear steps. A phrase like "reasonable price" has no citation value. A price table by package does.

3. Say clearly who you are. Business name, field, address, person in charge and contact number must be consistent on every page. AI builds your business "entity" from this information.

4. Use structured data (schema). Mark up FAQs, products, the organisation and articles with schema.org so machines understand correctly: this is a question, this is a price, this is a business.

5. Do multilingual properly. When customers ask AI in English or Chinese, the AI looks for sources in the same language. A trilingual website with correct hreflang tags opens two more markets. See the trilingual SEO-ready website.

6. Update regularly. Old content, old prices and old policies make AI lose trust. A clearly displayed update date is also a signal.

A detailed checklist for each item is in the article AI search optimization checklist.

Your website can also answer by itself

GEO brings customers in. Once they arrive, they still have questions. An AI assistant right on your website, answering from the very documents you wrote for GEO, keeps them on your site instead of sending them back to ChatGPT to ask again. One content base serves two jobs: being cited by outside AI, and letting your own AI answer. See Agentic AI for business.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO needs a solid technical SEO foundation: a fast website, indexed pages and a clear structure. GEO adds a way of writing and marking up content so that AI cites it.

How do I know if ChatGPT has cited my website?

Ask the AI tools the questions customers in your industry often ask and look at the sources they cite. Track traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and other AI sources in your analytics tool.

Can a small business do GEO?

Yes, and it has an advantage: a small business that answers one narrow niche in depth is more likely to be cited than a generic aggregator page.
